Education

Learning, education and research lies at the core of San Mei Gallery’s activities.

We are continually developing strong and long-lasting relationships with local schools and charities such as The Baytree Centre and CHIPS to facilitate young people’s engagement with the arts in the local community.

We provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about and engage with contemporary art practices, bringing together schools, charity partners, academic institutions, artists and our wider community.

Our Space

San Mei functions as both a gallery and community space. In the past, we have organised Arts Council funded creative workshops for people of all ages.

We are always looking for community groups and charities to collaborate with, and can make the space available to various local organisations.

You could even hire the building for a staff away-day with creative wellness activities, which we can facilitate with our roster of highly experienced artist educators.

If you have any ideas or enquiries about using our space, please get in touch with us by contacting us here.

Baytree family celebration event and workshop

The Baytree Centre

San Mei has been nurturing a long-lasting relationship with The Baytree Centre which continues to grow.

The Baytree Centre is a local educational charity providing holistic support for migrant and refugee women and girls through personal development activities and workshops.

Over the past year, we have partnered with Baytree to deliver seven art workshops across the span of our 2024 exhibition programme, in response to the various ongoing exhibitions.

The workshops aimed to facilitate creative wellbeing activities for women at Baytree in a warm and welcoming environment. Our artist educator introduced various artistic materials and practices like clay sculptural work, mask-making, and poster-making to attendees, who learnt a range of new creative skills and were able to express themselves artistically.

Young People

We are building new partnerships to help us to bring more young people from our local community in Lambeth into San Mei Gallery.

Recently, we have been working with youth workers and young people from the charity CHIPS on Angell Town Estate.

Alongside our 2025 exhibition programme, we are coordinating a programme in partnership with CHIPS to deliver creative workshops to school children within the CHIPS organisation.

We are constantly seeking new partners to work with to better support young people who want to train in contemporary art.

We have strong connections and relationships with various artists and art educators who can help bring young people more comfortably into the world of art, enabling them to express themselves in a safe space through various creative workshops.

Research and Development

We provide educational opportunities for artist research and development for university level art students in collaboration with art schools such as the Royal College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.

In February 2021, we collaborated with the RCA’s MRes Architecture, Fine Art and Humanities Pathways in the creation of a show of their individual research launched as a part of the RCA Research Biennale. Find out more here.

We have also partnered with Oxford University to offer internship programmes to students on scholarship programmes, in order to provide young people with work experience and help them progress into a career in the arts.

Get in touch with us here to find out more about how to become one of our education partners.
